The Bowen Technique

The Bowen Technique

The Bowen Technique is a gentle soft touch therapy.

The technique is holistic, non-invasive and drug-free. It involves using fingers and thumbs to moving over muscles, tendons and other soft tissues in the body, with the client lying, sitting or even standing. Bowen can also be given over light clothing.

The Bowen Technique aims to rebalance the whole body. In recent years it has been recognised that treating symptoms in isolation often leads to recurring problems. By addressing the whole body, Bowen is helping people from elite athletes, to babies and the more mature, to address many health conditions, and to maintain well-being and good health.

The Bowen Technique is suitable and safe for everyone from new born babies to the elderly, including the frail and mums-to-be.

What a Bowen Treatment involves

Your initial telephone consultation or assessment will take approximately 30 minutes. There is no charge for this.

This will involve postural and functional observations,  I will record your past and present health concerns as well as any current medication and medical diagnosis.

A treatment normally lasts for 30-50 minutes. During the treatment we’ll take a series of short breaks,  where you will be left resting to allow your body to respond and adjust to the treatment moves. This helps to rebalance the body, relieve tension and reduce pain.

Treatments are usually at weekly intervals to allow the body to respond between treatments.

Three to five treatments are often enough to achieve lasting results. With chronic or degenerative conditions further treatment sessions or regular ‘top-ups’ may be helpful.

The work is very subtle, relaxing and gentle,  involving no hard or prolonged pressure. During a session you will lie on a therapy table or bed, although the work can be effectively carried out sitting or lying with whatever additional support is necessary for comfort.

Most of the work can be performed through light clothing or directly on the skin. If you prefer treatment to be through clothing then please ensure it is light and non restrictive.

Most people find the therapy very relaxing and very often sleep during treatment!
